The Archdiocesan Decree on Child Protection Training

St. Teresa of Avila complies with The Decree on Child Protection which is promulgated by the Archbishop of Cincinnati.  Our fingerprinting policy includes manual fingerprinting for employees and electronic background checks for all employees and volunteers.

Virtus is the training model used in conjunction with the Decree on Child Protection of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Anyone having contact with children as a volunteer or Archdiocese employee must be trained in the Decree. All other Catholics of the Archdiocese are urged to be familiar with its contents as well.

To gain approval for volunteering or working with children there are several requirements which must be met before approval will be granted. The steps are easy, affordable and streamlined, knowing how valuable your time is.

  1. As a Volunteer or employee you are required to attend a Virtus Training Session and have an “online” background check done. You should register for one of the many Virtus Sessions offered throughout the Archdiocese by going to www.virtus.org. Since you can take the training anywhere, it is important to make sure you list your home parish or institution when registering. Once you have registered, attend the session you signed up for. These Sessions are generally about 3 hours long.
  2. You can also do your “online” background check when you register for a class.   It is easy and the $25.00 cost can be charged to your credit card. We do not offer tokens for background checks. By having your background done at the same time you register for a Session, you help streamline the process and reduce the amount of time it takes to gain approval.  It can also be done direction through www.selection.com.
  3. The last requirement is to read a monthly bulletin about child protection or other pertinent topics. This bulletin is sent out each month from Virtus. It takes only minutes and you never know what you might learn about protecting your or other children. The few minutes you sacrifice could make a huge difference in the life of a child.

Employee background checks are done through Selection.com just like volunteers. In addition, all employees have to sign a B4 form for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, submit to a BCI manual fingerprint and in many cases FBI fingerprints because of state licensure. Many professional positions require manual re-print to
renew license.

Virtus training sessions are held at St. Teresa of Avila the second Thursday of each month, except July and December. Sessions are held in the Undercroft and begin promptly at 6:45 PM. Children are not permitted and no late arrivals will be admitted.
